Troy Secure MICR Toner…Worth it?

Troy Secure MICR Toner Example

You may have notice that Troy sells something called “Secure” MICR toner cartridges. The “Advantage” of Troy Secure MICR toner is that it smears a red dye on the page if tampered with. There are several reasons why this is probably not the best use of your money. Mainly most check fraud these days isn’t done via check alteration. Most people that engage in check fraud these days simply reproduce checks using their own check paper and MICR toner. Additionally our 500 series of check paper has built in chemical reactivity so if someone attempts to alter a check, the paper reacts and the check is ruined.

500 Series Check Stock Indicator Stains

A good quality check paper loaded with security features like our 500 or 600 series check stock is a good way to deter check alteration, as it makes scanning your reproducing your document via a scanner more difficult. If you want to eliminate check fraud a positive pay system is your best bet. Here’s how positive pay works. After every check run, you send a file to your bank with the check #, amount, date and payee. Then when a check is presented to your bank, it has to match up with the positive pay records the bank has on file. If it does not, the bank will not honor the check. Depending on the amount and the quantity of checks you write, it may take over a month if ever for you to realize that someone has written a bogus check against your account. By that time you may find you are out a considerable amount of money. In time you’ll get your money from the bank, but it may take time for the bank to do it’s own investigation and credit the money back.

With Advantage you have three choices when it comes to buying MICR toner cartridges for your Troy Laser Printer.

  1. Premium New MICR Toner Cartridges made for Troy printers: These are new HP toner cartridges that have been retrofitted with MICR toner. When you buy a Troy brand cartridge you get a retrofitted HP cartridge as well. In addition we add the toner secure feature that allows your Troy printer to recognize a MICR toner vs. a standard toner cartridge. Typically Troy uses something simple like installing a magnet on the toner cartridge.  The printer has a sensor that detects the magnetic field. If there is no magnetic field, then the printer will prompt you to insert a MICR toner cartridge before printing. This is the most reliable MICR toner you can buy. We rarely get a new MICR toner cartridge returned.
  2. Advantage Remanufactured MICR Toner Cartridges made for Troy printers: Our remanufactured toner cartridges are remanufactured in Atlanta, Georgia – not China. We replace the entire imaging system in our remanufactured cartridges and only use cartridges that have never been remanufactured before. All toner cartridges are thoroughly tested and inspected. After inspection, we print MICR test documents and analyze them in a RDM analyzer to verify that the MICR toner meets ABA, ANSI and CBA standards. Finally we install the Troy toner secure feature so that your Troy  printer will recognize that the toner cartridge is a MICR toner cartridge. These cartridges are very reliable and have a 100% money back guarantee.
  3. Genuine Troy Brand MICR Toner: – If you insist on paying top dollar for a Troy brand MICR toner cartridge, we have them in stock. Troy produces a good MICR toner cartridge and their quality is consistent month to month. In fact we use Troy toner in some of our MICR toner cartridges.

Which MICR toner to use in your Troy printer? The decision is yours. Personally I would use the Advantage remanufactured as they are very reliable and the cost savings makes it your best option. If you want supreme reliability, I’d go with the Premium New MICR toner cartridges from Advantage. You are the customer, and the choice is yours. We’re here to serve your check printing needs.
