New Toners for HP P1005, P1006, P1505
We’ve just released 4 new Advantage Brand toner cartridges. Both a text and a MICR toner cartridge for the HP CB435A and CB436A. The CB435A is most commonly used in the HP P1005 and P1006, while the CB436A is most commonly used in the HP P1505.
The cartridges are all remanufactured and represent a savings of 30 – 35% over buying new HP cartridges. These cartridges are engineered to print the same page yield with the same print quality as a new HP toner cartridge.
All of these cartridges come packed in “the box” and are in stock as of today.

New Energy Management System Saves Electricity and Money
In May we started working with Empower in install an energy management system to help reduce our demand peaks. We have two major sources of power demand, air conditioning and our toner collection system. Our toner collection system has a 30hp motor that pulls air (and toner) from all of our workstations. The system is oversized and probably pulls more juice than it should. When we first installed it back in 1998, we figured we would be building twice as many toner cartridges withing a few years and would need the extra workstations. And while we are doing well, we have not grown as fast as we’d hoped. But I digress…
The energy management system or EDGE as empower calls it, monitors our total power usage and if we start pulling more than 40kw EDGE adjusts the temperature by a couple of degrees, while rotating HVAC unit one at a time at the normal temperature. Once the toner collection system goes off (and usage goes below 40KW), the AC units are then allowed to bring the temperature back down.
By reducing our peaks, we can reduce our overall power rate. Our previous high peaks were around 70kw. We’re hoping the new system will have our peaks around 40kw. In addition we seem to be using less power as well.
Empower recently used us a case study. Read more about our energy management system.
New Product: Canon MFP MICR Printer
New Product: The Canon ImageClass MF4370dn multi-function printer with a MICR Toner cartridge. Traditionally we’ve only sold HP printers, but we felt the Canon was a better printer on several fronts. Primarily Canon has better drivers that work better and don’t require as many resources. Canon actually manufactures HP LaserJet printers, so the quality is the same with either HP or Canon. Also Canon delivers more bank for the buck. The MF4370dn includes print (23ppm), network connectivity, fax, scan, copy and duplex capabilities in one tidy package.
The Canon MF4370dn uses the Canon 104 MICR cartridge which is almost identical the the HP Q2612A cartridges used in the HP LaserJet 1012 printer. Canon has installed a tab that prevents 104 from being used in an HP printer and vice/versa. We also plan to offer a remanufactured Canon 104 MICR toner cartridge as well as a standard 104 remanufactured cartridge.
We should have the Canon MF4370dn MICR MFP printer in stock in early August 2010 at the latest.
New Products: MICR Toner for Lexmark E260, E360 & E460
The Lexmark T650 MICR toner has been such a success, we’ve decided to go deeper into the Lexmark lineup with our MICR Toner. We’ve just started developing a MICR toner cartridge for the Lexmark E260, E360 and E460 series. To start with we will produce the 3,500 page yield E260A11A MICR cartridge as it is compatible with all three series printers. Lemark makes a 9,000 page yield cartridge (E360H11A), but it is not compatible with the E260 series, so we’ll stick with the cartridge that works with them all.
The E260A11a is compatible with the following Lexmark printers: E260D, E260DN, E360D, E360DN, E460DN, E460DW, E462DTN
Expected release date is early August 2010.
Teaching Old Cartridges New Tricks – eWood
Close the Loop in Australia has found a great way to recycle old and previously unrecycleable cartridges into something they call eWood. First let me explain that many cartridges can not be remanufactured, they are either too unreliable to be remanufactured or worn out. Before we ever sell a remanufactured toner cartridge, first we have to be able to provide a reliable product, and in many cases that just isn’t possible. In which case what do you do with the empty? Our goal is to keep it out of the landfill and if it can’t be re-used, then it has to be broken down into its base components and recycled. Recycling the metal components is easy, but the recycling the plastic is a problem.
Close the Loop has a process in which they shred the cartridge via the “Green Machine”, remove the metallic components (mostly steel and aluminum) then recycle the remaining plastic by transforming it into eWood. eWood is like Trex or other plastic decking a plastic wood that can be used for decking, park benches, fences, you name it. The big drawback to eWood as I see it is the wood comes out black. For most applications, black is not only ugly, it holds heat. As all cartridges are black, this is a problem. Furthermore it’s virtually impossible to pigment black plastic into anything more attractive. Still the fact that you took a toner cartridge bound for the landfill and transformed it into something useful like a bike path. The Simpson Gap Bike Path was constructed from eWood.

Dell 5230 / 5350 MICR Toner in R&D
We’ve just started working on a Dell 5350 / Dell 5230 MICR toner cartridge. We hoping to offer a high yield cartridge with a 21,000 page yield. This will be a new MICR cartridge, not remanufactured. The Dell cartridge is very similar to our Lexmark T650 MICR toner cartridge, the main difference being the chip which does not allow cross use of consumables between Lexmark and Dell printers.
Dell offers 4 variations of cartridges for this printer, although two varieties are really the same thing with a “use and return” policy. When you buy a “use and return” cartridge you are agreeing that you will return the cartridge to Dell and not let the empty fall into the hands of someone whom “heaven forbid” might actually recycle or remanufacture the cartridge. And for this Dell allows you to save $120 on the high yield cartridge and $60 on the standard or low yield cartridge. Dell seems to have modeled this practice after the Lexmark “Prebate” cartridge in which Lexmark offers you a rebate in advance if you agree to return the cartridge to Lexmark. All of this is done to keep the empty cartridges from being remanufactured or recycled. If the cartridge is remanufactured then that’s revenue that Lexmark / Dell does not receive.
The “use and return” or “prebate” policy to me seem to add to confusion. My guess is most customers just bought the cheapest one and never really felt then entered into a contract buy buying the “prebate” cartridge, and therefore what they did with it had no bearing on the “contract” but rather what was convenient.
